A Journey Through Glass
Twenty-five litres. Over thirty-three standard bottles. One hundred sixty-six to 200 glasses. The Sovereign — and the name says it all. This bottle doesn’t serve wine; it holds court.
Unlike its biblical-king siblings, the Sovereign takes its name from the concept of supreme authority itself. It’s the format of Bordeaux and Burgundy’s grandest gestures: collector auctions, château anniversaries, and receptions where the guest list reads like a wine atlas. When a house bottles a Sovereign, it’s declaring that this vintage — and this moment — reigns supreme.
The logistics are appropriately majestic. A full Sovereign weighs 30+ kg (70 lbs) and stands well over a metre tall; it travels in a custom crate, rests in a cradle, and pours only with a trained team. Chilling one is a catering operation. Moving one is a two-person job with a spotter. But the payoff is 200 glasses poured from a single bottle — a spectacle no magnum, however fine, can touch.
The Sovereign is also a reminder of how the large-format tradition works at its peak: the greater the volume, the slower and more gracefully the wine matures. Inside that towering glass, 25 litres of great wine are aging at their absolute best — which makes the eventual opening both a tasting and a coronation.
Pure spectacle: the Sovereign is the second-largest bottle most collectors will ever encounter — standing in the shadow of only the Primat and the twin 30-litre kings. Bow accordingly.
