A Journey Through Glass
Meet the Jennie — the 500ml half-litre that lives in the sweet spot between a demi and a full bottle, pouring 3–4 glasses. It’s the in-betweener that deserves far more love than it gets.
The Jennie is a weeknight hero: enough for one person across a long, lazy dinner, or two people who pace themselves. It’s the bottle that says dinner deserves wine without saying tomorrow doesn’t matter. No leftover half-bottle going flat in the fridge, no heroic finishing required.
This format is a quiet staple across parts of Europe — Austria and Germany especially, where the half-litre has long been the natural size for everyday table wine. Order a glass of Grüner Veltliner in Vienna and there’s a good chance it was poured from something very much like a Jennie.
The name itself is a bit of a mystery lost to the trade — “Jennie” is simply what the wine world calls the 500ml bottle, the way sailors have names for every rope. Whatever its origin, the logic is undeniable: two-thirds of a bottle is, for many evenings, exactly the right amount of wine.
Look for it on the shelves of European-style wine shops and restaurants that take their by-the-glass game seriously. Once you’ve had a Jennie evening, the full bottle can start to feel like showing off.
